Present Perfect Quotations

I’m putting this post up here not because I think I’ve got a fabulous new teaching idea, but because I wish someone else had already posted this somewhere so I could have stolen it. But alas, I couldn’t find something like this anywhere, so I created my own activity.

I’m teaching the present perfect tomorrow in class, and I wanted to introduce the tense by bringing in some interesting quotations to have my students discuss. So, here’s what I came up with. If you have any cool quotations to add or if you want to steal the activity, feel free!

Present Perfect Activity

Everything has been said before, but since nobody listens we have to keep going back and beginning all over again. — Andre Gide

Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new. — Albert Einstein.

We judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing, while others judge us by what we have already done. — Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.  — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Group work:

  1. Discuss these quotes with your classmates. Do you agree or disagree? Can you think of any personal examples to prove or disprove the quotes?
  2. Look at the verbs in bold. When does the action take place – in the past, present, or future? Do these actions take place at a specific time or a more general time?
